Can You Take Nicotine Pouches on a Plane? UK Airport Rules and Countries Where They Are Banned

Can you take nicotine pouches on a plane? Nicotine pouch cans from VELO, ZYN and PABLO with hand luggage and destination rules for UK travellers

Heading away for Christmas, a stag do or a winter sun break? If you use nicotine pouches, two questions matter: can you take nicotine pouches on a plane, and are they legal where you are going?

Getting through UK airport security with pouches is simple. The destination is where people get caught out: since 1 April 2026, France bans even personal possession of nicotine pouches. This guide covers both, with links to the official sources.

Security is easy; check the rules at your destination before you fly.

Quick answer

Quick answer

  • Hand luggage: yes. Pouches are not a liquid, so the 100ml liquid rules do not apply.
  • Hold luggage: yes, pouches can go in checked bags too.
  • On the plane: usually allowed, as there is no smoke or vapour, but the crew have the final say.
  • How many: take a sensible personal amount in the original cans.
  • France: banned, including possession, since 1 April 2026. Do not take pouches there.
  • Also check: Belgium and the Netherlands ban sales; Australia only allows them on prescription.

Can nicotine pouches go in hand luggage?

Yes. Nicotine pouches are dry or moist pouches, not a liquid, gel or aerosol, so the liquid limits in the UK's hand luggage rules do not apply to them. You do not normally need to take them out at security. ZYN's own UK travel guide says the same: you can normally take pouches in your cabin bag, or pack them in the hold.

Keep them in their original, sealed cans with the label visible. It makes them easy to identify if security asks what they are.

Pouches vs vapes: vapes have their own rules because of their batteries and liquids. Nicotine pouches have neither, which makes them one of the simplest nicotine products to fly with.

Can you use nicotine pouches on the plane?

Smoking and vaping are banned on all UK flights. Nicotine pouches produce no smoke or vapour, so most passengers use them without anyone noticing, and the ZYN travel guide says they can usually be used during the flight. Airline policies vary, though, and the cabin crew have the final say, so if you are unsure, ask.

Bring the can so you have somewhere to put used pouches. Most cans have a separate compartment in the lid. Never leave used pouches in the seat pocket.

How many cans can you take?

There is no specific UK limit on how many cans you can carry for your own use. Customs rules are about personal use, so a sensible amount for the length of your trip is fine, while a suitcase full of cans may raise questions. The bigger issue is your destination: some countries do not allow pouches at all, as below.

Countries where nicotine pouches are banned or restricted

Travel rules for nicotine pouches: banned including possession in France since 1 April 2026, sale banned in Belgium and the Netherlands, prescription only in Australia
Check the rules at your destination before you pack pouches.

Nicotine pouches fall outside the EU's tobacco rules, so each country sets its own (Euronews). These are the restrictions UK travellers are most likely to meet:

Country What the rule is Source
France Banned since 1 April 2026: use, possession, purchase, sale and import French government
Belgium Sale banned since 1 October 2023 Belga News Agency
Netherlands Sale banned since January 2025 Euronews, Feb 2025
Australia Illegal unless prescribed by a doctor Australian TGA
Czech Republic Nicotine limit of 10mg per pouch; no sales to under-18s Euronews, Feb 2025
Hungary 17mg nicotine cap on nicotine products Euronews, Feb 2025

A sales ban does not always mean possession is banned, but you will not be able to buy pouches there, and rules change. Before you travel, check the UK government's foreign travel advice for your destination. For a wider overview, see our guide to nicotine pouch laws worldwide.

France: the strictest ban for UK travellers

France is the destination to be most careful with. The French government's official notice says that from 1 April 2026, nicotine pouches and other oral nicotine products are banned, covering "use, acquisition, possession and sale", as well as import. Licensed stop-smoking medicines such as nicotine gum are not affected.

Norway's Foreign Ministry has warned its own travellers that the ban applies to people bringing pouches in for personal use, with penalties of up to five years in prison and a €375,000 fine under the law (The Local Norway, April 2026). Leave your pouches at home if you are travelling to France, including on Eurostar and ferry trips.
